Opal Edna Peters

December 8, 1911 ~ June 14, 2016 (age 104) 104 Years Old


Opal Peters, age 104, died Tuesday June 14, 2016 at Spring Valley Senior Living. Where she had been for a very short time.

Opal Edna Powell was born Dec. 8, 1911 at Mount Vernon, Ill. to Joseph Semon Powell and Laura May Dill Powell.

The family made their home in Sherwood, IA. Palmroy, IA, Jolley, IA Rockwell City , IA., making their final home in LeRoy, MN. in March of 1927. She graduated from Riceville, IA. High School in 1929. 


Opal taught in the Oak Dale Country school in Chester Township for 7 ½ years after receiving her teacher’s normal training certificate.

On May 29, 1937 she was married to Ronald Peters. Two sons, Ronald Edwin and Danial Wayne, were born from this union. She  and her family owned and managed their farm and the Peter’s Bus service.

Opal was raised in the Methodist church and joined the First Presbyterian Church of LeRoy in 1958 where she was an active member the remainder of her life. She taught faithfully in Sunday School and participated in the women’s ministries and home Bible studies, sharing her love of her Lord Jesus Christ through prayer, and service for anyone in her life, wanting all to have the greatest gift she had known.

Opal’s wish was to live a good life in her home with friends and family nearby, which she did vigorously until she suffered a stroke, went to sleep and left us a day later, June 14, 2016 at the Spring Valley Care Center.

She is survived by her sons and daughters in law, Ronald and Gloria Peters of LeRoy, MN., Danial and Ardelle Peters of LeRoy, MN., her grandchildren, Tara Stockman and husband Brian Stockman of Stewartville, MN. Jay and Ferida Peters of Rochester, MN., Brenda Cimbura EdD. and husband Tim Cimbura of Blaine, MN., Nathan and MikiLu Peters of  Menominee, Mi., Phd. Jason and Naomi Eden of St. Cloud, MN. and nine great grandchildren.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Ronald, sisters, Edith Duncomb and Zelma Powell, and 1 brother Ernest Powell.  

She will be dearly missed by her family, her friends, both young and old and her community.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday June 18, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church in Le Roy with the Rev John Kerr officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville, IA. Visitation will be held for 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
