Funeral Mass for Robert D. Johnson of Grand Meadow will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday January 3, 2016 at St Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow, MN with Father Marreddy Pothireddy officiating. Burial will be in St Ignatius Cemetery in Spring Valley, MN. Visitaion will be held on Monday January 2, 2017 from 3-5 P.M. and will continue at the church on Tuesday for 1hr prior to the service.
Robert Johnson, age 88, of Grand Meadow, MN died Thursday December 29, 2016 at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.
He was born February 1, 1928 in Rochester, MN to Alfred and Mabel (Nelson) Johnson. Robert attended and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1946. In November of 1950 he was inducted into the United States Army and served until September of 1952. On April 18, 1953 he was united in marriage to Ethelyn Roberts at the St Ignatius Parsonage in Spring Valley. In 1953 Robert started working for JF Anderson Lumber Company in Grand Meadow. He worked at the Grand Meadow location until 1955 when he became manager of the JF Anderson Lumber Co. in Dexter, MN where he worked until returning as manager to their location in Grand Meadow. In 1966 he became employed at IBM in Rochester, MN as a shipping and receiving clerk. He was employed by IBM until his retirement in 1991 after 25 years of employment. Following his retirement he worked part-time at Boyum’s Grocery Store in Stewartville until 1998. Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, especially watching his grandchildren’s activities. He and Ethelyn enjoyed taking short car trips, and visiting Branson, MO. They also enjoyed dancing to Polka and waltzing while socializing with friends. Robert enjoyed hunting and fishing and took pride in his yard work while driving his John Deere tractor. He was always a giving and caring father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Ethelyn of Grand Meadow, children; Diane (Larry) Kellner and Steven (Nancy) Johnson both of Rochester, MN, David (Ann) Johnson of Grand Meadow and Barb (Brian) Abbott of Stewartville, MN, 7 grandchildren; Jessica (Tony) Pelzel, Nicholas Kellner, Ashley Johnson, Patrick Johnson, Paul (Allison) Johnson, Neal Abbott and Nathan Abbott, 5 great-grandchildren Nolan, William, Hudson, Griffin and Emma Pelzel. He was preceded in death by his parents.
