Viola Roman Obituary

Viola “Vi” Roman, 99, of Cresco, IA, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Regional Health Services of Howard County with her daughter by her side.

Viola Mary Peters was born March 25, 1925, in Paris Twp., Howard County, Iowa, to Ernest H. and Mary C. (Vit) Peters. Upon graduating from Cresco High School in May of 1942, Vi began employment August 1, 1942, as a stenographer with the Howard County Department of Human Services.  Effective May 16, 1973, she was promoted to the position of Social Service Aide, this title later changed to Income-Maintenance Worker.  Vi held this position until her retirement on March 19, 1987, in which time she had been an employee of the State of Iowa for approximately 44 years, minus 2 years for maternity leave. On June 16, 1947, Vi was united in marriage to Bernard James Roman at the Assumption Catholic Church.  Vi was a member of the Cresco American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary.  She served as Howard County President of the American Legion Auxiliary, and also held several district offices with the American Legion Auxiliary.  As an active member of the social concerns committee at Notre Dame, she helped with refreshments and provided bars, and was also a member of Howard County Genealogical Society.

Vi was a member of The Shade or Shadow (S.O.S.) China Painting Club, an associate member of the Cedar Falls China Painters Guild, and was installed as State President of the Iowa World Organization of China Painters in April of 1987 to 1988.  Vi was an extremely talented china painter and had cabinets full of the beautiful china she had decorated over the years.  She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, cooking, baking and playing card games such as 500 and Euchre.  She loved her furry cat and dog companions, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Vi is survived by her daughter Carol Roman of Cresco, grandchildren Michael “Mac” (Laura) McGuire of Neenah, WI, Kevin McGuire and Alison (Tyler Popp) McGuire both of Brainerd, MN, sister-in-law Merle Hedeen of St. Peter, MN, nieces and nephews Karen (Alvin) Voyna, Melvin (Edna) Haskovec, Gerald Haskovec, Patricia Nolan, Joanne (Mike) Nolan-Petermeier, Gary (DeAnna) Nolan, Larry (Mary) Nolan, Joe Hedeen, Jim (Twyla) Hedeen and Bill Hedeen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bernard on November 3, 2004, son Robert “Rob” Roman on October 21, 2019, infant granddaughter Meagan Anne McGuire, brother Lawrence (Janet) Peters, sisters-in-law Alice (William) Haskovec, Velma (Harry “Bud”) Nolan, brother-in-law Vern Hedeen.
