Barbara “Cow Grandma” Runde– McIntire, Iowa

Barbara Ann (King) Runde “Cow Grandma,” age 80, passed away Monday, November 26, 2018 at her home after a 9 month battle with colon cancer. 

Mrs. Runde was born August 29, 1938 in Adams, Minnesota to Leo and Helena (Meurer) King.  On November 14, 1959, she married Henry “Hank” Runde at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Adams and they farmed in the McIntire area.

Everyone referred to Barbara as “Cow Grandma” because of her hard work on their dairy farm and her amazing love for children.  She will be remembered for the many visits to their farm from preschool and kindergarten students to learn about dairy farming.  She also will be remembered for her excellent cooking and baking skills, particularly homemade bread, as well as her enormous and giving heart.   

Survivors include four sons, Mike (Deb) Runde of Tucson, Arizona, Dean (Sandy) Runde of Riceville, Iowa, Ronnie Runde of McIntire, Iowa, and David (Kim) Runde of LeRoy, Minnesota; two daughters, Sharon (Mike) Goldsmith and Susan Runde, both of Rochester, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Danielle, Kristina, Tami, Alan, Rachel, Joseph and Elizabeth; and five greatgrandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Alan Runde, five brothers, and a sister.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in LeRoy, Minnesota with the Rev. Charlie Collins officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, November 30 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in LeRoy and for 1 hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. Hindt Funeral Home of LeRoy is assisting the family.

Memorials may be made out to Howard County Community Hospice in Cresco, Iowa.
