Everett Kumm Obituary

Everett Raymond Kumm of Cannon Falls, MN, age 89, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at The Gardens at Cannon Falls, MN.

Memorial services for Everett will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, MN with the Reverend Mark Woodward officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Inurnment at the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Everett was born on the family farm near Spring Valley, son of Raymond August and Hilda Marie (Schneider) Kumm, on September 8, 1929.  He attended the Spring Valley school and graduated from high school in 1947.

Everett worked on the farm starting at an early age and continued through adulthood until his father sold the farm in the early 60’s.  In 1964, Everett met and married the love of his life, Karen Elizabeth Thune.  Together, they raised Everett’s two children and in time were blessed with two more children.

When called upon during the Korean conflict, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army for two years.  During his service at Fort Knox his leadership was recognized by promoting him to Drill Corporal to train and motivate new recruits culminating in a honorable discharge at the end of two years.

Everett was a hard worker and generous with his time and talents.  He strongly believed in being a good son, husband, father, and neighbor through leading by example on a daily basis.  His youngest son remembers being taught to “be a good neighbor and always look out for the elderly”.  Over the years Everett worked on construction and plumbing infrastructure until he purchased a milk truck and route hauling canned milk from farms to the local creamery.

His love of farming led him to purchase a farm in the Rushford area with his passion being the raising of Holstein calves.  This continued when he relocated to a farm north of Spring Valley.  Before retiring he enjoyed working for the school as a janitor.  He was a longtime member of Faith United Methodist Church.

Everett was a creative handyman always looking for a better way to fix things.  He envisioned the snowmobile a long time before it was marketed.  As an avid fisherman, he fished many lakes in northern Minnesota and made his own special lures.  He loved to tell jokes, play cards, and watch the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.

Everett was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Fae Kappers.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, and children, Darwin (Georgann), Dawn (Tony), Allison, and Matt (Patti).  Surviving grandchildren include Maria, Allen, Mandy, Tyler, and Lauren.  He is also survived by eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to the Prader Willi Syndrome Association USA (pwsausa.org) or a charity of their choice.

The family thanks the wonderful staff of The Gardens at Cannon Falls and Moments Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and excellent care of Everett.
