Florence J. Foss

Florence J. Foss, age 100, a long-time Preston resident, died Monday, December 17, 2018, at Green Bay, WI.

Florence was born on April 19, 1918, in Carimona Township, rural Preston, to Henry and Cora Peterson, and had one brother, Clifford Peterson. She graduated from Preston High School in 1935, then attended Normal Training and taught grades 1-8 in the same school she had attended as a girl.  In 1939, she married Kenneth T. Foss, and they continued to reside in Preston, raising four daughters.  Kenneth preceded her in death, as well as her brother.

Florence wore many hats, including restaurant work, an accomplished seamstress, matron and cook at the Fillmore County Sheriff Department and was also very active in her church.  She enjoyed card club, dancing with friends and gardening was her favorite hobby.  She loved being outdoors maintaining her large gardens and sharing the bounty of those gardens.  She was a “Florence Nightingale” herself, caring for her parents, her husband, and many friends, relatives and neighbors over the years.

In 2014, Florence sold her home in Preston and moved to Green Bay, WI, to be closer to family.  She lived her last three years at The Odd Fellow Nursing Home there, where she was loved and cared for by a wonderful staff, awarding her the title of “Sparkle Queen”, since she loved her glitz.

Florence is survived by her four daughters, Dianne Hartzell of Hartford, WI; Carole (Bob) Thom of Chatfield, MN; Rosanne (Garry) Nietz of Zumbrota, MN, and Katherine (Max) Roth of Green Bay, WI, as well as 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on December 29, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 509 Kansas Street NW, Preston, MN, with a visitation one hour prior at the church.  The family prefers memorials to Christ Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.  Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home Preston, MN, is assisting the family.
