Jodi Marie Hayek-Kappes, 53 of Cresco, IA, passed away unexpectedly on Friday September 1, 2023, at Mayo Clinic- St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, MN.
Jodi was born on May 19, 1970, to Joseph Hayek and Shirley Bigalk (Solomon) in San Diego, California. Jodi grew up in Cresco, IA graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1988. Following high school, she started working at Walmart as an overnight stocker, then worked her way up to Human Resources, where she worked for 31 years. She was currently working at Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA in the Human Resources Department.
In June 1997, she married the love of her life, Donald Eugene Kappes, of Cresco, IA. They spent 26 wonderful years together. They lovingly raised Codey Michael Hayek.
Most times you could find Jodi at the Kendallville Campground, where she on many occasions referred to it as her happy place. She loved to read a good book and have a cold drink while sitting in her camping chair with no cell-phone service. When she was not camping, she could be found quilting, crocheting, gardening, canning goods, or helping out at the K-Town Tap in Kendallville. Jodi loved to host many holiday and family gatherings, usually followed by great drinks, board games, and making great memories.
Jodi is survived by her husband, Donnie Kappes, son Codey Hayek (Brittany) and granddaughter Brooklyn, mother Shirley Bigalk, father Joseph Hayek, brother Michael Hayek (Deana), brother Jon Hayek (Francie), many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Jodi was preceded in death by her stepdad Dale Bigalk, sister Susan Baldwin, grandparents and many aunts and uncles. Although Jodi’s life was cut short, she left a huge impact on many and will be remembered by her contagious laugh, kind heart, sarcastic wit, and famous eye roll.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco. A vigil service for close family will be held after the visitation.
