Milton Lund Obituary

With family present, Milton Lund, age 93, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco, Iowa.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 7 at 10:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander, MN with Rev. Hermann Bakker officiating.  The burial will take place at Bloomfield Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday, March 6 from 4:00 – 7:00 and one hour before the funeral service on Wednesday.

On August 29, 1924, Milton Orville Lund was born in Thompson, Iowa to Nels and Helga (Pederson) Lund, Norwegian immigrants who migrated to the United States in 1909.  They settled in the area around Lake Mills, Iowa where Milton spent his youth and attended country school through the 8th grade.  In 1942 he joined the US Navy.  He was stationed on the USS Beale, #471, a destroyer, in the Aleutian Islands and the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On December 8, 1944 he was united in marriage to Leona B. Olsen and together they started farming in Beaver Township MN.  In 1956 he gave up farming and moved to Babbitt, MN to work for Reserve Mining as an assayer.  In 1958 he chose to return to farming and spent the remainder of his career as a farmer in Forestville Township, MN.  In 1968 he assumed the role as firefighter for the Veterans Administration--Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, MN retiring in 1987.

Milton was a charter member of the Ostrander American Legion and was an active member of the Spring Valley VFW.  He was very active in promoting the construction of the veteran memorials in Ostrander and Spring Valley.  He also served two terms on the Ostrander Trinity Lutheran Church council and served on the Bloomfield Lutheran Cemetery board for many years.

Hunting and fishing were two of Milton’s favorite pastimes.  He also enjoyed lending a helping hand to those needing assistance. In the mid 70’s he and Leona organized and sponsored the first USS Beale reunion which was held in Spring Valley, MN.  To this day, the reunions continue to be held annually at various locations across the United States.

Milton Lund is survived by Lois Beving, a union blessed by God, five children: Dick (Diane) Lund of Atascadero, CA, Bev (Jim) Mathison of Racine, MN, Roger (Sandie) Lund of Sparta, WI, Ron (Cindy) Lund of Chatfield, MN and Lenny Lund of Spring Valley, MN, 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona in 2007, a daughter, Barbara Bernice in 1947, his parents, 4 sisters and 4 brothers.
