Delbert R. “Del” Borchardt, age 82, of Riceville, IA, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage, IA, following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville, Iowa with Rev. Matthias Wollberg officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery Riceville, Iowa; where Military Honors will be rendered by Riceville American Legion Post 244. Public visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, September 24, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Delbert Roy Borchardt was born October 8, 1938, in rural Worth County, Iowa, youngest child of Lloyd and Esther (Schmidt) Borchardt. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, IA, on October 31, 1938, and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville on May 24, 1953. Del was a graduate with the class of 1956 from Riceville High School. After high school, Del served in the Army from January 1957 to January 1959. On June 20, 1959, Del married Betty Ann Shultz at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. They were blessed with over 62 years of marriage. Del started work at Salsbury Laboratories, Charles City in the fall of 1962. He worked at the facility for approximately 34 years.
Del loved spending time with family and “The Gang”. He enjoyed watching sports with the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes being his favorite teams. Watching sports that his children and grandchildren participated in gave him pleasure and pride. He also enjoyed watching Westerns and Military movies.
He is survived by his wife Betty of Riceville, IA; children Mark (Sherry) Borchardt of Cedar Rapids, IA, Sherri Borchardt of Lebanon, TN, Mona (Greg) Grimm of Eau Claire, WI, and Carl (Kristy) Borchardt of Waterloo, IA; grandchildren Melinda (Jourdan) Reeder of Cedar Rapids, IA, Ashley (Ryan) Honan of Tinley Park, IL, Katlin (David Roach II) Borchardt of Cedar Rapids, IA, Nicole (Jaron Knuth) Borchardt of Eau Claire, WI, James Grimm of Eau Claire, WI, Tiffany (Josh) Galvin of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tara (Jeff Brymer) Wilson of Waterloo, IA, Heather (Bryce) Davis of Mason City, IA, and 19 great grandchildren.
Del was preceded in death by his parents, sister Arliene Walk, brothers Delwin and Darryl Borchardt, mother-in-law Leona (Arlin) Schrieber, father-in-law Lyle (Myrtle) Schultz, and great granddaughter Kenley Brymer.
