Mary Ann Odle Obituary

Mary Ann (Kubik) Odle, 86, passed away August 9, 2020 at home in Chula Vista, CA. She was born November 1, 1933 in Cresco to Edward and Beata (Praska) Kubik, who farmed a couple of miles North and West of Lourdes.

Mary Ann attended Catholic grade school in Lourdes and Notre Dame High School in Cresco, IA. After her junior year, she traveled to California to spend the summer with a cousin. Soon after arriving, Mary Ann went on a blind date and met her future husband, Bill, who was in the Navy stationed on a ship. They dated almost every weekend. When she returned to Cresco for her senior year, she was engaged. After graduating high school, Mary Ann visited Bill’s family in California for a couple of weeks and while there, plans were made for their wedding which took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on September 22, 1952. On that day, she became a “Navy Wife”, and for the next 27 years of Bill’s career, she made a home for the family, living first in San Diego, then Des Moines, where Bill was a Navy Recruiter, Long Beach, Yokosuka Japan, Norfolk, Great Lakes, Boston, Virginia Beach, and finally back to San Diego. During this time, four children were born, three of which while her husband was deployed to either Asia or Europe. With several mouths to feed, cooking became her passion and she became an excellent cook. Mary Ann accumulated a very large number of cook books and also enjoyed collecting recipes from the internet where she had accumulated hundreds before her failing eyesight intervened.  She enjoyed her many return visits to Cresco, especially for Lourdes Steeple Days. For fifty years she was a member of St Pius X Catholic Church, Chula Vista, CA.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her oldest son Michael, her parents, and brothers Edward Jr., Joseph, and Stephen.
