Mary Ann (Mayer) Shane

Mary Ann Shane, age 77, of Riceville, Iowa, went to be with her Lord surrounded by her family on October 31, 2021. Although she wasn’t tired, the Lord called her to be with Him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 03, 2021, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, IA with Father Jerry Kopacek officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Riceville. Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. until time of service at the church with a public rosary at 11:30 a.m. before the visitation. 

Mary Ann Shane (Mayer) was born February 16, 1944, to Paul and Anna (Meyer) Mayer in Riceville, Iowa. Mary was the youngest of 11 children. In 1961, Mary Ann was wed at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville to Robert Shane of Taopi, Minnesota and started their own family shortly thereafter. Mary always had a heart for helping others and found her career as a caretaker at the local care center. Mary and Robert had 5 children.

Mary loved baking, visiting family and friends, listening to bluegrass music, dancing, singing, shopping (mostly for others), and practicing her Catholic faith. Mary also was known to indulge in the occasional “nip” of whisky and gambling on penny slots.

Even through the toughest times, Mary held strong to her Catholic faith. She especially adored her spiritual mother, Mary. She prayed her rosary without ceasing. She took extreme pride in being a great mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Mary’s greatest joy in life was spending time with and spoiling her great-grandkids. She adored them, and they loved their “MeeMaw”.

Mary Ann Shane is preceded in death by her husband Robert; her sons James and Alan; her grandson James; 3 sisters and 6 brothers.

She is survived by her sister Kathleen Hummel; her daughters Gina (Rusty) Taylor, and Deann Shane; her son Daniel (Patti) Shane; her stepdaughters Candy Verdick, and Penny Wayne; 11 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.
