Suzanne Lohuis Obituary

Suzanne Rita (King) Lohuis, age 75, of McIntire, IA, passed away at her home surrounded by family after a courageous yearlong battle with brain cancer. She was born February 20, 1946, to Philip and Marie (Eisterhold) King. She was the oldest of ten children born to this union.

Suzanne began her education at country school in Bailey, IA. She continued with grade school at McIntire Independent from first grade through eighth grade. She graduated from Riceville Community High School in 1964.

After graduation, she began working in the medical records department at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She enjoyed her time working there, until she resigned in September of 1966. On September 24, 1966, she married Robert Lohuis at St. Mel's Catholic Church in McIntire, IA. Suzanne and Robert were blessed with five children.

In 1970, Suzanne and Robert founded Lohuis Construction, Inc. They spent their years building many homes in the southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. In 1990, Suzanne purchased a long arm quilting machine. She quilted many quilts for local clients and clients across the United States. Some of her favorite quilts were ones she pieced and quilted for her family, specifically the ones she would make for her grandchildren as they graduated high school. Over the years, Suzanne was a member of St. Mel’s and Sacred Heart Catholic Church rosary societies, religious education teacher, and the North Iowa Vintage Automobiles club. Suzanne and Robert were avid square dancers and polka dancers.  Other hobbies she enjoyed were gardening, baking, dancing, and motorcycle or car trips. Suzanne always enjoyed family trips and family gatherings.

After Suzanne and Robert passed down Lohuis Construction to their sons, Dan and Jim, they continued to help their sons with the business and were frequently on the construction site. Later, Suzanne and Robert would enjoy their winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. During their stays, they would flip houses, visit with friends and relatives, and enjoy the desert heat.

Suzanne is survived by her husband, Robert and her children Annette (Marty) Adams of Meyer, IA, Deanna (Steve) Eastman of Riceville, IA, Dan (Nicki) Lohuis of LeRoy, MN, Becky (Steve) Heller of Adams, MN, and Jim (Jenny) Lohuis of McIntire, IA; her brothers and sisters, Paul King, Laverne (Donna) King, Marvin (Kathy) King, Irene (Ed) Huegel, Margaret (Jim) Osland, Richard King, Theresa (Brad) Wolff, Eileen King, and Carol (Dan) Rainey. Sisters-in-laws Mary (John) Havlik, Margaret (John) Shatek, and Sharon (Bill) Zwiebohmer. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Landon Lohuis; sister-in-law, Diane King; sister- and brother-in-law, Pat & David Pospichal; nephews, Karl Shatek & Jason Wolff; and niece, Jenny King.
