Tillie DeWalle Obituary

Tillie H. DeWalle, 96, of Cresco, Iowa, died Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Evans Memorial Home, surrounded by family.

Private family services will be held at the Notre Dame Catholic Church.

Tillie Helen Sobolik was born April 27, 1924, to Albert and Agnes (Markovetz) Sobolik.  She attended rural school and graduated from Cresco High School in 1942.  On August 27, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles DeWalle at Assumption Church in Cresco.  They farmed in Howard and Winneshiek County where Tillie was born till they retired, and moved to Cresco in November 1990.  Tillie and Charles worked side by side on the farm milking and working the ground.  She was very much a farmer’s wife, and expected everyone to keep up with her.

Tillie was very family orientated.  She was always there for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  Tillie loved to grow huge vegetable gardens.  She enjoyed spending time in her garden, canning and sharing garden produce to family and friends.

Tillie and Charles were avid dancers, especially liking square dance.  They played many hands of 500 and Euchre.    Charles and Tillie traveled to all 50 states and to Europe.  She made it to Alaska twice and enjoyed a bank trip to the Czech Republic with Denny.  Tillie spent many hours searching Sobolik and DeWalle genealogy.  Tillie loved to cook huge meals for family, cooked at Assumption Catholic School, and volunteered at the Senior Citizens meal site.  She kept her hands busy crocheting prayer shawls for Notre Dame Church.  The last items she crocheted were 3 baby blankets for her granddaughter Lindsay.

She is survived by her daughter Sharon (Jim) Sobolik of Cresco, IA, and their children Christopher (Lurleen) Sobolik, their children Madeline and Mitchell of Cumming, IA; Jason (Amy) Sobolik, their children Peter, Ava, Jonathan, and Luke of LaCrosse, WI; son Dennis (Mary) DeWalle of Redlands, CA and their daughter Emily Anderson of Redlands, CA, and daughter Linda (Steven) Middlebrook of Cresco, IA and their children Lindsay (Chris) Marti of Seattle, WA, and Drew Middlebrook of Fargo, ND; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles on May 23, 2014, sister Helen who died in infancy, also many aunts and uncles.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Tillie’s hospice team, Dr. Jon Kammerer and mom’s hospice nurse Nikki Shimek and all hospice services provided. Also, a thank you to Regional Health Services of Howard County, the superb care given by the staff at Evans Memorial Home, and Tillie’s guardian angel, Patty Mohn.  Thank you all for your care and compassion given to us and our mother.
