Truman Olson Obituary

Early Sunday morning, April 16th, 2023, Truman Olson, age 84, passed from this life to join his wife Donna, family and friends that had preceded him on the heavenly journey.

Truman was born on a Sunday at his parent’s home during a late October blizzard.  He was the third of five sons that would bless Ed and Agnes Olson.  When Agnes talked of Truman’s birth, she told of the trouble the midwife had in getting to the house during the storm.  Truman didn’t get much chance to know his father though, as Ed gave his life to save others during World War II and Agnes would raise the five boys herself in their small Grand Meadow home.  A good job she did too, as each one of them grew up to be upstanding men.

Truman graduated from Grand Meadow High School where he loved sports and aspired to pursue a career as a coach until he met a girl from Spring Valley.  Truman and Donna married June 14th, 1958, and welcomed the first of their five sons, Andrew, in February 1959.

To support his new family, Truman secured a job with the Department of Agriculture’s feed grain storage program and shared many stories through the years of his time working for the government.  He stayed with that program until its end in the mid 1960’s and then shifted his direction to the career that he enjoyed the rest of his life, a carpenter, in residential and agricultural construction throughout Southeastern Minnesota.  Truman was a true craftsman and much of his work around the area stands today as monuments to his skill.

Truman enjoyed sports, fishing, family, and snacking.  The snacks he enjoyed the most were: ice cream, popcorn, pudding, Cheetos, lefse, homemade doughnuts and pies, and especially green Jell-O with banana slices.  But nothing could compare to slipping off to Culvers for a hamburger!

In February 2022, his beloved wife Donna passed away and Truman was moved to the Stewartville Care Center where he received wonderful care and had fun teasing the great staff that became his new family, always wearing his Frank Sinatra fedora.

Truman was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Donna, his parents, eldest brother Keith and first son Andrew.

Survivors include his sons: Terence, Eric, Alex, and Sam, of Grand Meadow.  His brothers and their wives: Frances (Fritz) and Audrey Olson, Peter and Arlene Olson, David and Carol Olson and sister in-law Gloria (Mrs. Keith) Olson, many nieces, nephews, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday April 21st, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church 74727 265th St, Grand Meadow, MN 55936. The visitation will be one hour before the service.  Truman will be interred in the family plot at the church cemetery.
