Melvin E. Kilbourn, age 92, of Ostrander died Saturday July 9, 2016 at the Spring Valley Senior Living where he had resided for a short time.
Melvin Earl Kilbourn was born July 22, 1923 in Rolf, IA to Earl and Eva (Crawford) Kilbourn. He attended and graduated from West Bend High School in West Bend, Iowa. After graduation Mel entered the United States Navy where he served on a Troop Transport. On February 9, 1954 he was united in marriage to Loura Orr in Des Moines, Iowa. Mel started working as a mechanic at a filling station in Lorentz, IA and later for a Body Shop in Des Moines. Shortly after his marriage Mel and Loura moved to a farm near Ostrander, MN where they farmed for many years. During the winter months Mel also worked for Bob Gross in Grand Meadow, MN.
Mel enjoyed mowing lawn and always looked forward to Spring Time and being able to get back on the tractors. He especially enjoyed his fishing trips and going to the Diner in Grand Meadow for coffee almost every morning.
He is survived by his wife Loura of Ostrander, 2 daughters Patricia (Steve) Moe of St Michael, MN and Lynette (Jerry) Bossart of Fort Dodge, IA, a son-in-law Wes (Eileen) Etheridge of Florence, Oregon, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 sister Mardel (Don) McVina of Storm Lake, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son; Francis, 1 daughter; Linda, an infant grand daughter; Dawn Bossart, 2 sisters; LaVonne and Mildred and 1 brother Dwayne.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday July 14, 2016 at the United Church in Grand Meadow with the Rev Jon Marburger officiating. Burial with military rites will be at the Grand Meadow Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7p.m. on Wednesday at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow and will continue for 1hr prior to the service at the church.
