Our thoughts are with all of Thelmer's family. He was a cousin to my mother and I enjoyed seeing him when I and Phil would attend the "cousin gatherings" each June. He could still speak enough Norwegian to say the prayer before we ate lunch. We also attended some of the Rudlong/Engerud picnics in Aug and he was always so happy to see everyone there.

IN MEMORY OF COUSIN THELMER

Thelmer will be dearly missed by those of us first cousins remaining out of the original group of 19. Because he was the second oldest, he became our mentor in learning the importance of family in our lives. Our grandparents, Engebret and Anna Rudlong, immigrated to America from Norway and had 7 children born here. They formed a close-knit family, with Sunday afternoon get-togethers a common occurrence at the family homestead, where Norwegian was the spoken language.

From that upbringing, Thelmer instilled in all of us a love of family. He was the promoter of an annual family picnic in the park each summer, up to and including his 94th summer. Even though some of our first cousins live as far away as California, we continue to keep in touch with each other.

Thelmer had a great love for all things Norwegian. He encouraged us to celebrate our heritage by learning about Norwegian holiday traditions and foods and having get-togethers to share those things. We cousins shared photos and stories of times spent with our Rudlong grandparents. As the youngest of the cousins, this inspired me to work on a genealogy of our family.

We all have many fond memories of time spent with Cousin Thelmer, a kind man who loved to visit with everyone and who always had a smile, even though he was struggling with breathing problems for so many years. God rest his soul.
