Funeral services for Mayvis K. Speer will be held 1:30 Monday November 2, 2015 at the Le Roy Lutheran Church with the Rev Herman Bakker officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 3 – 5 p.m. on Sunday November 1, 2015 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Le Roy and will continue for 1hr prior to the service at the church.
Mayvis Speer, age 78 of Le Roy, MN died Thursday October 29, 2015 at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center.
Mayvis Kathleen Hanna was born on March 21, 1937 in Thompson, IA to George and Ida (Brekke) Hanna. She attended kindergarten in Manly, IA and later attended a country school, driving a horse and buggy. She then attended school through the 6th grade in Fertile, IA. IN 1948 they moved to Adams, MN and then to Le Roy, MN in 1952 where she graduated from High School in 1955. In 1957 she met Kenneth Speer and the two were joined in marriage on July 20, 1958 at the Le Roy Lutheran Church. IN 1967 they moved to the family farm where together they have farmed ever since. On April 28th, 1978 their son Kevin was born.
Over the years she worked for Mendleson and Halling “The Egghouse” in Le Roy, was appointed Acting Post Master in Taopi, MN and in 1993 started working for the Treehouse nursery near Chester, IA. Over the years Mayvis was active in many clubs and organizations including; The American Legion Post 161 Auxiliary, The Monday Birthday Club and served as a Bennington Twp. election judge . She was a long time member of the Le Roy Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and enjoyed making assorted ceramics, quilts, blankets and scarves. She had a green thumb, loved gardening and adored horses, especially “Tony” and her dog “Shep”. She also loved music and playing cards with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth Speer and 1 son Kevin both of Le Roy and 2 grandchildren, Jaxon and Amelia Speer. 1 sister, Janice Hepker and brothers, Marvin (Judy) Hanna and Merle Hanna along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 brother Maynard and his wife Alta Hanna, a sister-in-law Kathy Hanna and a brother-in-law Ken Hepker.
